Improving Quality of Life for People With Disabilities

BETHPAGE — Hundreds of wheelchair-bound residents attended the fourth annual Independence and Mobility Fair on Friday, which focuses on providing a better quality of life for people who have had serious injuries or those born without the ability to walk unaided. People in attendance learned about everything from finances to functionality of the latest products designed to help individuals who are confined to wheelchairs.

Did you know that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month? And because of that, Bussani Mobility Team is offering a special FREE workshop to help individuals with disabilities overcome barriers in the workplace. The session will take place tomorrow, September 14 (3pm) at the “2012 Independence and Mobility Fair” (500 Central Avenue, Bethpage, NY) and will be presented by Lauren Wenzel, Coordinator of Consumer Services, of Abilities, Inc. at The Viscardi Center.

Called “A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce – Be Independent – Be Employed!” the workshop will give individuals with disabilities an overview of the educational and vocational services offered by Abilities, Inc. at The Viscardi Center. Assisting and empowering individuals to find and maintain employment, the Center’s services include diagnostic vocational evaluations, vocational training programs, case management services, supported employment, service coordination, assistive technology consultation, evaluation and training, and adaptive driver education. , is a non-profit organization designed to help provide physically disabled individuals with the opportunity to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic activities associated with water sports in order to improve the overall quality of life and health.

Who’s your pick for our next President?

Bussani Mobility Team wants to help people with physical disabilities make their voices heard. So on September 14 (10am-5pm) and September 15 (10am-4pm) at our annual “Independence and Mobility Fair,” applications for voter registration forms and absentee ballots will be available, along with information about accessible voting machines. The event will take place at Bussani Mobility, 500 Central Avenue, Bethpage, NY.

The fair attracts hundreds of people living with physical disabilities, their friends and families to learn about all types of accessibility products and services to help them be more independent and make their lives easier. More than 30 organizations and exhibitors will be on hand with displays of home modifications, wheelchairs, scooters, lifts, adaptive equipment and services, and so much more. On Saturday, the young people will enjoy a Kid’s Carnival Corner with wheelchair accessible games, crafts, balloon animals, face painting, and even a red carpet fashion [...]
