wheelchair accessible vans in the New York

The automotive experts here at Bussani Mobility Team are now offering an option for your wheelchair accessible vehicle that could save your life!

It’s called the Firetrace in-car fire suppression system. And here’s why it’s important…

Fires in vehicles present special challenges for both detection and suppression. Road grime, dirt and airflow can create unpredictable environments that can be harmful to most automatic fire suppression systems — and these threats can make it difficult to extinguish a vehicle fire.

The Firetrace system was specially designed to work inside vehicles. So, when a fire is detected, its unique polymer composite tubing bursts releasing its extinguishing agents – and the fire is suppressed much faster than it would be using manual suppression.

“No one wants to think about getting into an accident or a car fire, but sometimes these things do happen. And people with physical disabilities have added challenges to deal with when responding in these [...]

Wheelchair Sports Federation

It’s time to take your friends and family out to the ballgame! The Wheelchair Sports Federation and the NY Aviators will be playing at Bulova Park on Thursday, June 28 (5:30-8:30pm). Bring your glove because everyone will get a chance to play.

Bulova Park is on 25 Ave. bet. 76 St. and 77 St., East Elmhust, Queens. Parking is available behind the Bulova Building. Click HERE for directions. For more information, call Dan Tratt at 914-471-7874.

The Wheelchair Sports Federation is a national non-profit organization that provides opportunities for people with physical disabilities and wheelchair-bound adults and youth to play sports recreationally and competitively. Some adaptive sports (like Wheelchair Basketball) have been around since post-WWII, but others (like Wheelchair Football) are relatively new to the adaptive athletic population. The Wheelchair Sports Federation is one of the first organizations to provide adaptive athletes with the opportunity to participate in a variety of adaptive sports.

National Mobility Awareness Month

The winners of the “National Mobility Awareness Month” contest have been announced — and each of them has been awarded a customized wheelchair accessible van! They are:

• Alberto Cruz (from Connecticut) – Last summer, the 15-year-old became paralyzed while surfing on Narragansett Beach, R.I. Despite grueling therapy sessions after the accident, Cruz chose to continue his schooling and remain connected with his community. This moved his teacher, Lynn Frazier, who nominated him as a Local Hero. “Heroes attract other heroes. Alberto’s courage touched something deep inside my students and their families,” said Frazier. “It planted a seed of hope in our community.”

• Ken Davert (from Michigan) – Managing his own cerebral palsy, Ken and his family are also coping with wife Missy’s and their 13-year-old twins’ (Austin and Michaela) osteogenesis imperfecta (which is a brittle bone condition). The family is active in their community from Michaela in Girl Scouts to Missy as a [...]

wheelchair accessible van maintenance

So you’ve got a wheelchair van – and you’re traveling safely in style! Now, how do you make the most of your investment? What’s the best way to manage your wheelchair accessible van maintenance?

We asked Bussani Mobility Team’s Service and Production Manager, Dan Walsh, to share some of his best tips for making sure your wheelchair accessible vehicle goes the distance.

1. Use It – Letting a vehicle sit around can be just as harmful as excessive use. Did you know that a three-year-old wheelchair van with under 10,000 miles will often need new tires or hoses or gaskets, all due to dry rot? Keeping your vehicle on the move helps slow down corrosion.

2. Regular Maintenance – Keeping up with your scheduled maintenance is as important to your conversion as oil is to your engine. That includes proper lubricants, alignment, and most important, upgrades.

3. Find a Service Facility You Trust – Don’t [...]

Bussani Mobility Team

wheelchair accessible vanJohnny was injured from birth, and he’s been living in a group home since he was 5. Until a few months ago, when the Boutin family purchased a Town & Country wheelchair accessible van that was custom-fitted by Bussani Mobility Team for Johnny’s needs.

The van arrived just in time for Christmas. And to make the [...]

I got involved with this awareness project because I’ve been celebrating mobility for the greater part of my life and I wish the world would join me even if only for a month.”

And he had more to say about adaptive vehicles: “The first time I got behind the wheel of my new van, a [...]
