Employment Tips and More at Independence & Mobility Fair 9-14/15

Did you know that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month? And because of that, Bussani Mobility Team is offering a special FREE workshop to help individuals with disabilities overcome barriers in the workplace. The session will take place tomorrow, September 14 (3pm) at the “2012 Independence and Mobility Fair” (500 Central Avenue, Bethpage, NY) and will be presented by Lauren Wenzel, Coordinator of Consumer Services, of Abilities, Inc. at The Viscardi Center.

Called “A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce – Be Independent – Be Employed!” the workshop will give individuals with disabilities an overview of the educational and vocational services offered by Abilities, Inc. at The Viscardi Center. Assisting and empowering individuals to find and maintain employment, the Center’s services include diagnostic vocational evaluations, vocational training programs, case management services, supported employment, service coordination, assistive technology consultation, evaluation and training, and adaptive driver education. A variety of referral sources that may provide employment assistance, such as ACCES-VR, the Department of Labor, the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH), and the Veterans Administration (VA), will also be discussed.

“For too long, the disconnect between qualified workers with disabilities and the skill sets needed to continue to make America great has left millions of workers with disabilities out of the economic mainstream of life. Given the opportunity, more of our qualified Americans with disabilities could be rebuilding this country, buying homes, and fully enjoying the promises of equal opportunity, independent living, full participation, and economic self-sufficiency,” said John D. Kemp, President and CEO of The Viscardi Center. “Next month is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and we want businesses to recognize that they have an extraordinary opportunity now to add to their talent and promotion pools, expand their customer bases and diversify their supply chains by tapping the talents and buying power of America’s 59 million people with disabilities and their families.”

Employment challenges are just one of the important topics that will be addressed at the “2012 Independence and Mobility Fair” on September 14 (10am-5pm) and September 15 (10am-4pm). FREE 45-minute workshops will run throughout the two-day event, including topics such as: accessible travel, good health and fitness, wheelchair sports, canine companions, veteran’s benefits and services, home modifications, legal and financial services. More than 30 organizations and exhibitors will be on hand. FREE wheelchair tune-ups will also be provided by certified mobility specialists. And there’s a special Kid’s Carnival Corner. The event attracts hundreds of people living with physical disabilities, their friends and families to learn about all types of accessibility products and services to help them be more independent and make their lives easier.
